Ten Pieces of Inspiration

1. Kahlil Gibran on learning
You don’t have to like someone to learn from them.
“I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.” – Khalil Gibran
2. Gary Greenberg on the hidden beauty in our world
The quote near the end of this is beautiful.
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

- William Blake
3. Abraham Lincoln on being quiet
I write about personal finance only because I’m drawing directly from and mostly speaking from my own experiences. There are so many topics I’d love to share my thoughts on, but whenever I learn more about a topic, I usually learn quickly how little I really know. I’d rather just read and learn more.
“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.” – Abraham Lincoln
4. Saying goodbye
Something about this image tugged strongly at my heart.
Emigranten: tranen bij afscheid
The woman is saying goodbye to some friends and loved ones who are moving to New Zealand. She likely won’t see them again for a long time.
5. Kurt Cobain on who you are
The problem with being something you’re not is that eventually the facade cracks and you’re left with nothing at all.
“I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.” – Kurt Cobain
6. William Lyon Phelps on the sign of a good man
It’s easy to respect those who can possibly help you in life. Can you respect those that cannot?
“This is the first test of a gentleman: his respect for those who can be of no possible value to him.” – William Lyon Phelps
7. Victory gardens
I miss the concept of victory gardens. The cultural idea that we can help our nation through the simple act of gardening is a wonderful one, and one that applies in peacetime as well as wartime. If you grow your own food, you don’t strain the food systems of the nation.

8. General Dwight Eisenhower on war and peace
Eisenhower was one of America’s top generals in the second World War. He still kept war in perspective.
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower
Eisenhower was a Republican president and a very wise man.
9. Stand By Me by Ben E. King
This one gets me every time.
10. Thomas Jefferson on politics and friendship
I hope people will keep this in mind no matter how they felt about Tuesday’s election.
“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” – Thomas Jefferson
Nothing is gained through disdaining those who disagree with you.
